Thanks for another fun auction, Epsilon Sisters!! Last Saturday was a wonderful morning! We had a great time talking and sharing fellowship. Then, the real fun began! Chris acted as our guest auctioneer and did a great job! Our chapter has such creative ladies! We had some really nice auction items, as always. Of course, there was some spirited competition for some items but there was, as always, lots of laughter. If you missed the meeting, we missed you! Hope you can join us Dec. 7th for our Christmas meeting and initiation of new members. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

It was great to see so many smiling faces at our first meeting of the year yesterday! Martha was taking up dues and passing out yearbooks. Cindy was selling Belk Charity Sale tickets (it's Nov. 2nd and she'll be selling again at the Oct. meeting) and gave our Moment of Orientation-- DKG's 7 Purposes. Edna shared her experiences at the Southeast Regional Conference in Orlando this summer. She also raffled off a bucket of DKG goodes and fall essentials. After our business meeting, the Regional School's Music Therapist Jessica Simpson led us in a drum circle. It was so relaxing and fun! I hope everyone had a great time! Thanks to everyone who brought school supplies for the Women and Children's Center.
Our next meeting will be On Thurs., Oct. 10th at 4PM at Baker High School. We'll have new member recommendations and then share some arts and crafts fun time. PLEASE CONSIDER SHARING YOUR ARTS AND CRAFTS PROJECTS WITH YOUR EPSILON SISTERS! LET LORI KNOW WHAT PROJECT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE AND THE MATERIALS LIST NEEDED FOR THE PROJECT.Also, please bring some Halloween treats for the kids at the Women and Children's Center. NEW MEMBERS: Please consider nominating your fellow women educators for membership in our chapter. We are always looking for teacher who would like to join our ranks! Membership invitation letters and recommendation forms will be arriving in your email boxes soon! NEW MEMBER RECOMMENDATIONS MUST BE TURNED IN AND VOTED ON AT THE OCTOBER MEETING (OCT. 10TH). HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL ON OCT 10TH AT BAKER HIGH SCHOOL!! Your chapter executive committee met in June to plan meetings and programs for 2013-2014. I want to thank each of the wonderful ladies who gave their time and energy! I believe we have some exciting plans, interesting programs, and fun activities for our Epsilon sisters! Our first meeting is set for Sat., Sept. 7th 9:30am at the Regional School for the Deaf and Blind on Burma Rd. I hope you can join us!!
I am very excited about our October meeting as we are bringing back a program we did a few years ago: Member-to-Member Arts and Crafts. If you have a craft or art project you would like to share with your Epsilon sisters, please let me know via email ([email protected]) before the Sept. 7th meeting. I would like to provide supply lists at the Sept. 7th meeting. Projects could include wreath making, holiday decorations, making scarves, or anything! Come on you crafty ladies, share your creativity with the rest of us! :) Your Epsilon sisters will have attended several meetings this summer by the time we have our first chapter meeting on Sept., 7th. Edna attended the Southeast Regional Conference in Orlando earlier this month. Edna and I will be attending State Leadership Training this Saturday in Clanton. Fall Board Meeting is scheduled for Aug. 24th in Clanton. State President Wendy Stephens emailed that she would love to see a "carload of ladies" from each chapter arrive at the Fall Board Meeting. I've been to two Fall Board meetings and have found them to be very interesting. You get to meet members from around the state-- and it's great to swap stories-- and I always learn more about how Delta Kappa Gamma actually works. Please consider going to Fall Board-- I don't want to go by myself! Click here for the registration form. See you soon! :) Lori We'll meet on Saturday, May 4th at 11AM at Fiddlefish Seafood Cafe to celebrate the ladies who founded Delta Kappa Gamma and we enjoy each other's company once more before Summer Break. Though we had planned to go on a Delta Safari cruise, due to scheduling problems we wouldn't be able to do that at the scheduled time. At last week's meeting, we decided to go out for lunch at Fiddlefish Seafood Cafe. This is our last meeting of 2012-2013. Devlynne Barnes, District VI Director, is planning to join us. Please make plans to be there and RSVP as soon as possible. As always, members may bring guests-- please just be sure to RSVP! Thanks! See you May 4th! Happy Spring!
Cindy, Edna, and I proudly represented Epsilon chapter at the Beta State Convention from March 1st to 3rd in Montgomery! New state officers were elected, business was conducted, workshops were attended, old friendships were strengthened, new acquaintances were made, and a fun time was had! I am pleased to announce that Epsilon Chapter received the Order of the Rose! Also, Mrs. Katherine Hankins was honored during the Ceremony of Remembrance. We'll be sharing information about the convention at the March meeting. Speaking of the March meeting... we'll be preparing Easter baskets for the Moms and children at the Women and Children's Center. This is always a fun meeting! We have 20 or so baskets to prepare this year, so--- ALL HANDS ON DECK, PLEASE! Please join us on March 26th at 4PM at South Brookley United Methodist Church to help with this project. See you there!!! ~Lori Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! It flew by so fast, as usual. And now we are faced with having to take down the decorations, which always seems to be much less fun than putting them up! Let's have some fun and do something worthwhile to ward off the winter doldrums: Afternoon tea! We'll meet at the Regional School on Thursday, Jan. 10th at 4PM and enjoy some comforting tea, delicious teatime snacks, and some great fellowship. Please be sure to invite an early career educator that you know-- a recent education graduate or a teacher who's been teaching for just a few years. We want to support these teachers as studies have shown that many teachers leave the profession within in the first five years. It's tough out there! Be sure to bring some money to purchase teabags from our Annual World Fellowship fundraiser. The proceeds will be sent to DKG International to help the World Fellowship International Project.
Also, please make plans to attend the Beta State Convention in Montgomery March 1-3, 2013. Please click here for more information about the convention. Hope you can join us! The more the merrier!! Another successful Epsilon Auction! Extra special thanks to everyone who came to yesterday's meeting and auction! We had our business meeting first and welcomed two of our new members-to-be, who will be initiated at the December meeting. We, also, welcomed Beta State President Bonnie Shanks and Beta State 2nd Vice President Nancy Karrick. Bonnie shared information about the Beta State Convention which will be held on March 1st-3rd in Montogomery. Check out the Beta State website for the convention schedule-at-a-glance, registration form, and volunteer form (see the blue box on the left side). The auction was so much fun, as always! Laura did another great job as auctioneer! There were some great items up for bid and there were some excited bid exchanges going on! I hope you'll check out the photos from our September meeting that Terri uploaded to the website on the Extras page. Thank you Terri for the wonderful job! Thank you, again, to everyone who came to yesterday's meeting, brought refreshments, brought auction items and participated in the auction! See you Dec. 8th at Christ Church Cathedral for our New Member Initiation-Christmas Celebration-Happy Birthday Epsilon! chapter meeting. Please be sure to RSVP to Carolyn (see yearbook or Oct. newsletter for her phone number) by December 1st. Hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day! See you in December!! Lori 11/15/2012 UPDATE: Our chapter website has been certified by Delta Kappa Gamma International and we are now linked from the Delta Kappa Gamma International Website (www.dkg.org)! :)
Fall is in the air!
Thank you to everyone who took part in our meeting last Thursday (Oct. 11)! Special thanks to: -Michelle Fairley for coordinating the legislators! It was very interesting hearing from Chad Fincher, Victor Gaston, and Rusty Glover. -Georgia and her crew for the delicious food! In a word-- yummy! -Chris, Michelle, and Marianne for bringing new member nominations for us to consider! It looks like we'll be welcoming 5 ladies to our chapter in December! -Edna and Jackie for delivering all the Halloween treats to the Women and Children's Center! That table was absolutely full of goodies! Thank you everyone for being so generous! I hope y'all were able to enjoy some great fellowship with our DKG sisters in other Mobile area chapters, Delta Xi (former Beta Tau) and Gamma Xi. We need to get together with the area chapters more often! We are selling Belk's Charity Sale tickets. They are $5 each and we get to keep all of that for our chapter. The Charity Sale is on Nov. 3rd from 6-10AM. Hope to see you at our next meeting on Sat., Nov. 3rd at 9:30AM. We'll meet at Baker High School. Be sure to bring something good (homemade, handmade, store-bought, made by someone else, etc.) for our annual auction. Also, we'll be collecting canned goods for the needy. (If you go to the Charity Sale, you can still make it to the meeting! That's my plan!) See you then! Lori P.S. If you haven't paid your dues already, please send your $70 to Martha Meier by Oct. 25th. See the newsletter for her address. We've started the 2012-2013 school year! Well, it was more like two first days of the school year: the actual first day on Aug. 20th... then the "other" first day (back) on Aug. 30th after Hurricane Isaac gave use three unexpected days off. Never a dull moment on the Alabama Gulf Coast!
We had our first chapter meeting of 2012-2013 last Saturday at the West Regional branch of the library. We shared a Getting to Know You activity-- and I still need to know which one of you ladies has eaten a Scotch Bonnet Pepper!-- and then had our business meeting where we shared information about the chapter yearbook, new member nominations forms, our chapter grant-in-aid, scholarships available from International and Beta State, and upcoming events. We enjoyed some delicious refreshments and, then, learned some new line dancing moves from Edna and her friends. It was a great meeting Team Epsilon! If you missed the meeting, we missed you! If you haven't been to a meeting in awhile, I hope you will make plans to join us soon! We really need all our members to share their talents and energy. I hope to see you on Oct. 11th, again at the West Regional branch of the library., when we'll meet with area legislators to discuss topics pertinent to education and our community. We've invited other area chapters to join us. Please email your questions for the legislators to Michelle prior to the meeting. Check your yearbook or the email I sent for Michelle's email address. Enjoy the rest of September and see you in October! I had the opportunity to attend the Beta State Leadership Seminar at the University of Montevallo last week. It was an amazing 2 1/2 days! I met some great teachers and learned much about our great Delta Kappa Gamma. We have such a rich history and the ladies that founded Delta Kappa Gamma were truly stand-outs in the field of education. I hope to be able to continue the legacy of our founders as we prepare for our 2012-2013 meetings and service projects. I am excited to work with all of you as I don the hat of president of our great chapter on July 1st! We'll be meeting this Friday to plan for next year's meetings and service projects. Please keep checking back for more info about our first meeting of the new academic year in September. In the meantime, have a wonderful summer!
